Expert Gender-Affirming Surgery at NYU Langone

Dr. Rachel Bluebond-Langner, MD, is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon specializing in gender-affirming surgeries at NYU Langone Health in New York City. She is dedicated to minimizing surgical risks while creating natural, aesthetically pleasing results for her patients.

As a leader in transgender surgical research and innovation, Dr. Bluebond-Langner actively develops and studies new techniques to optimize patient safety, outcomes, and satisfaction. Her work has introduced several novel procedures designed to better meet the needs of transgender patients.

Next-Level Innovations in Top Surgery

The two most common methods for gender-affirming top surgery are the double-incision with free nipple graft and the periareolar technique. However, for individuals with moderate breast tissue, excess skin, and nipples positioned higher on the chest, these traditional methods may not yield the best results. The double-incision technique can leave scars above the natural muscle shadow, while the periareolar approach might not remove enough excess skin.

To address this gap, Dr. Bluebond-Langner developed the Nipple-Preserving Inferior-Ellipse Mastectomy. This innovative technique preserves the nipples in their natural position while removing excess skin and tissue to achieve a smooth, well-contoured chest. It is especially suited for patients with moderate breast tissue, extra skin on the lower chest, and higher-set nipples.

How To Book a Consultation
Dr. Bluebond-Langner offers in-person consultations at NYU Langone in New York City. She accepts insurance payments only. This includes most private insurance plans as well as Amida Care, a specialized Medicaid plan in New York. However, she does not accept Medicare, out-of-state Medicaid, or New York Medicaid plans other than Amida Care.

Surgery Requirements
She follows the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care. To qualify for surgery, patients must be at least 19 years old, provide a letter of support from a qualified mental health provider, and have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or under.
